Why an external gas outlet on a camper van?

Anyone who enjoys cooking or grilling outside their van knows the problem: you either carry additional small screw-in cartridges or have to awkwardly access the gas locker every time. An external 30 mbar gas outlet allows you to supply a gas grill, camping stove, or radiant heater directly from the on-board gas system – quickly, safely, and conveniently via a quick coupling.

Required Material & Components

• Gas quick-release valve / gas outlet (GOK 30 mbar) with union nut & cutting ring
• 8 mm precision steel pipe for gas lines
• GOK T-piece (8 mm to 8 mm) for integration into the existing pipe system
• Pipe cutter & pipe deburrer (do not use a saw to avoid chips in the line)
• 3D-printed mounting housing / bracket (e.g., made of weather and UV-resistant PETG-CF)
• Leak detection spray for subsequent testing

Step-by-step: Assembly & Installation

1. Preparation & Planning the pipe routing

First, the gas cylinders are completely shut off and the lines are depressurized. Find a suitable position for the gas outlet – ideally near the sliding door or awning side. Installation in the lower vehicle area prevents unsightly cutouts in the body panel.

2. Install T-piece & bend pipe

The T-piece is installed on the existing 8 mm main gas line. The new 8 mm pipe is carefully routed with a pipe bender in the appropriate radii to the mounting location. Important: Always use a pipe cutter and deburr the ends cleanly before pushing on the cutting rings and union nuts.

3. Mounting the housing & coupling

The mounting housing is attached to the mounting points and the GOK quick coupling is firmly screwed to the new line. The housing protects the coupling from dirt, splashing water, and stone chips while driving.

4. Leak test & commissioning

Once all cutting ring screw connections are properly tightened, the gas system is opened and every connection is generously sprayed with leak detection spray. If no bubbles form after several minutes, the system is leak-proof and ready for use.
