Fiamma Carry-Bike Frame with Bike Rack Box

Practical additional storage space on the campervan: DIY installation of a Fiamma bike rack for more space on the go.

To create additional storage space for our Citroën Jumper campervan, I used a Fiamma Carry-Bike Frame for the Fiat Ducato, which can carry up to 50 kg. We don't necessarily need bikes on rails, but the rack offers us ideal space for a large aluminum box – perfect for leveling ramps, tent accessories, and other outdoor equipment. Since the children's bikes are small, I mounted a rail directly on the aluminum box. Alternatively, we use the space on top of the box for the stroller.

Mounting Details & Individual Solutions

1. Mounting of the Aluminum Box & Bike Rails

The installation was straightforward: The aluminum box was screwed directly onto the base frame of the bike rack. We mounted a bike rail on the lid of the box, so children's bikes or alternatively the stroller can easily be transported above the box.

2. Sand Plate Holder without Damaging the Carrier

To securely store the sand plates at the rear, aluminum square profiles were used. These were fixed to the frame with standard pipe clamps – this keeps the carrier in its original condition without annoying drill holes. The sand plates themselves are bolted with practical star knobs and can be removed in seconds in an emergency.

3. Additional Reversing Camera & Cable Routing

The rear box and attachments restrict the field of view of the original reversing camera. An auxiliary camera with a switching system provides a solution, activating either manually or automatically when reverse gear is engaged. The cable was routed with cable ties along the carrier and then along the underbody to the battery box inside the camper (required cable length: approx. 10 meters).

Conclusion & Everyday Experience

The combination of the Fiamma rear carrier, 142L aluminum box, and side-mounted sand plates offers enormous added value for travel. Bulky or dirty equipment no longer needs to be stored inside or in the garage. Thanks to the flexible attachments and the second reversing camera, the campervan remains absolutely suitable for everyday use and safe!
