Heavy-duty drawer slide in camper

Heavy-duty pull-out in the camper: Perfect organization and maximum access to under-bed storage.

Order in the camper: Heavy-duty pull-out for the rear garage

Anyone who travels with a camper knows: organization is half the battle – especially in tight spaces. For more clarity and comfortable access to boxes, accessories, and grilling utensils, I installed a heavy-duty pull-out in my camper. The goal was to organize the storage space under the bed with a large drawer and make it easily accessible.

💡 Theory vs. Practice in DIY camper conversions:

The pull-out was originally intended to span the entire depth of the storage space. However, a heating outlet and the inspection opening for the gas distribution made a continuous pull-out impossible – a clever custom solution was needed here!

📦 Required Materials & Products (Click to expand/collapse)
  • Heavy-duty pull-out rails (100 kg – 750 mm) with lock (Lock-in / Lock-out)
  • Mounting brackets: 1x set for floor mounting & 1x set for platform mounting
  • 10 mm multiplex panels (cut to size and sealed with protective varnish)
  • Hook lock & handle (1000 mm, black anodized)
  • Support rollers / small rollers to relieve the cantilevered part
  • Wood screw set (4.5 mm x 16) and washers for leveling

Challenges & Individual Solutions

1. Solid Base & Leveling Uneven Camper Walls

The pull-out itself was securely screwed to both the vehicle floor and the side wall. Stable 10 mm thick multiplex panels were used as material, treated with a protective varnish against moisture and wear. One obstacle: the furniture construction in the camper was not perfectly rectangular from the factory, but slightly trapezoidal. With washers and fine adjustment, the pull-out could be fitted with millimeter precision.

Befestigung am Boden Secure attachment to the floor and leveling of the sloping side walls.

2. The Support Roller Solution for Cantilevered Areas

Since the rails could not be extended all the way to the back due to the heating outlet and the gas inspection opening, part of the pull-out plate protruded unsupported and sagged when fully loaded. The solution: Small, smooth-running rollers under the cantilevered plate support the weight and reliably prevent dragging on the rear floor.

Zusätzliche Rollen Additional rollers prevent sagging with heavy loads.

3. Handle & Lock: Functionality Meets Aesthetics

A black anodized 1000 mm handle provides a clean and high-quality finish. This not only serves as a practical hook lock during travel but also feels comfortable in the hand and gives the rear pull-out an elegant look.

Conclusion & Everyday Experience

Installing a heavy-duty pull-out in the camper brings significantly more order and convenience. Instead of having to crawl into the dark rear, the entire contents of the rear garage can be pulled out with a single movement. Even if DIY constructions often require unexpected adjustments, the upgrade is worth it for everyday camping at every stop!
