Weekend in Gantrisch

Our Trip

Louis and I spent a father-son weekend together in the beautiful Gantrisch region on the Gurnigel. The Gurnigel has been Louis' absolute favorite mountain so far – though we've only been here in winter. So it was high time to explore the area in summer too. We headed to our usual spot and made ourselves comfortable there.

Early Friday evening, we had the idyll all to ourselves. The later it got, the more campers joined us – in the end, there were six of us at the spot.

On Saturday morning, we both slept in. After a leisurely breakfast, we made sandwiches, packed our backpacks, and set off for Gantrischseeli. From the parking lot, it took us about 45 minutes to reach the lake at a relaxed child's pace. The path is a bit steeper in one section, but still easily manageable for small hikers. My tip for families: It's best to choose the gravel road for the way there and the idyllic hiking trail through the forest for the way back – that's much more pleasant for children.

Once we arrived at Gantrischseeli, we enjoyed an extended lunch break. To our delight, it wasn't as crowded as we had feared, so we could enjoy the wonderful atmosphere. Louis used the time to climb, and together we practiced "skimming" (skipping stones on the water). Finally, we returned through the shady forest and down the steeper slope.

Back at our camper "Franky," we packed some snacks and walked to the other side to the Skilift-Beizli Gurnigel. There, we rewarded ourselves with an afternoon snack and enjoyed the fantastic view towards Lake Thun.

Back at Franky, Louis quickly made new friends. Since the official fire ban in the canton of Bern (as of August 27, 2026) had just been lifted, we lit a cozy campfire. While Louis carved and played with the two other boys, we let the successful day come to a relaxed end.
